Core Beauty Staples For Your Hair

Hey gals! It's Deidre. Happy 2016! There's nothing better than starting a new year with your closets, drawers, and cabinets cleaned out. It's so gratifying to know you are organized, put together, and can find whatever it is you're looking for without searching through every closet. Now that Tina has you covered on your core wardrobe staples (2 more still to come!), I'm here to help you sort through all those hair products that are collecting dust on shelves and in cabinets.

5 Basic Products You Need For Your Hair

Core Beauty Staples For Your Hair

I'm about to teach you the five basic things you need for your hair, and don't be afraid to get rid of something you haven't touched in years. You'll never spend money on unnecessary items again. I'm not a salesperson; I'm an educator. Here we go!

1. Heat Protectant

A light leave in conditioner typically works great as a heat protectant, like the Davines Dede Hair Mist found here or Kevin Murphy Staying Alive, which you can find in salons.

I always tell my clients if they only choose ONE product to use, make it a heat protectant. No, you don't see or feel an instant change in your hair by spraying this on, but it is the most important step to ensure your hair does not become damaged from things like the blow dryer, curling iron, and even environmental damage like the sun.

Spray this on wet hair before brushing, drying and styling.

2. Volumizer

Who doesn't want to give their hair a little boost?! The number one complaint I hear from clients is not being able to create volume at home.

You can typically stick to one volume product at home, whether it be a root spray or a volumizing mousse. Less is more. There's a fine line between using too much product and using just enough to make your style last. There's one volumizing product I use on 99% of my clients. And it smells like heaven. Style Vault members, get all the deets inside the January Style Vault, in the Style Notes section, and if you're in Nashville you can come see me at the Blowout Co.

Your volumizing product goes on when your hair is slightly damp, but not soaking wet.

3. Treatment Oil

One pump of this magic purple bottle will not only give you instant shine, but it actually repairs your hair as well. It's Kevin Murphy's Young Again Treatment Oil,  found in salons that sell Kevin Murphy.

To ensure your hair stays strong, smooth and nourished, two pumps of an oil per day will make a world of difference, especially during winter months.

If your hair is fine and/or thin and you're worried about using an oil-based product, use half a pump and always start at the ends, working your way up the hair shaft.

4. Dry Shampoo

I've just discovered the Privé volumizing dry shampoo, which I love. But my old trusty is the Fresh Hair. Both are around $25.

This product should actually be #1 on the list, especially if you get professional blowouts (which you should!). It is life-changing. Dry shampoo not only refreshes your style and brings life back into dirty hair, but it makes your hair smell good and can get you an extra day or two between washes.

Spray sparingly at the roots in short bursts, not in a steady stream. Then comb through the hair.

5. Hair Spray

You don't need 14 different cans of hair spray in your bathroom. If your hair easily goes limp, use a stronger hold. If you don't typically use hair spray but the weather is a little questionable, go for a medium hold.

Aerosol tends to be my favorite because of the way the product is dispersed. My favorite strong-hold aerosol hair spray actually happens to be low VOC, which basically means it has fewer chemicals than most other aerosol hairsprays. And considering I breathe it in all day, that's a huge plus! (Members, get the scoop on this environmentally-friendly hair spray I love so much in the Style Notes section of the January Style Vault!) Core Beauty Staples For Your Hair

Unless you have unusually curly hair and require a little more product assistance, these five items are the core beauty staples you need for your hair. Everything else can go.

Now that it's a new year, make room for new items that you actually need. I love educating my clients on what products will work best for their hair. Can't wait to share more insider beauty tips with you! Thanks for reading and have a great hair day!
