Three Lovely Holiday Outfits

Tina, here.

I'm sure by now you've gathered I don't do red and green together at the same time. Not for holidays, not ever. Red and green might be great for children's plays and pictures with Santa, but not for adults. Which is my point exactly. I like a soft and classic look for the holidays. Less neon and more tonal.

Here, my beauties, are three lovely holiday outfits that whisper softly, Happy Holidays.

1. A Black and White Holiday Outfit

Three Lovely Holiday Outfits

This holiday outfit is so easy it's almost embarrassing. Grab your black pencil skirt or any black skirt you have. The more fancy it is the better. Mine is taffeta and has velvet polka dots on it. Then grab a black blazer in another texture since you're mixing it with a non-matching skirt. Wear a white or ivory silk tank under the blazer, and you have a classic silver screen holiday outfit.

My accessories are creamy pearls and some shimmery gold, which get me a bit closer to my Audrey Hepburn holiday.

You can wear a non-matching black skirt and blazer when they are different textures to get an on-purpose fashion statement that works. When they are the same fabric, but different dyes of black, it looks weird. And it looks like you tried to match them but failed. I just added 2 really great black skirts to the December Style Vault, Style Notes section, including a pretty lace a-line one, that you can wear with just about any black blazer or jacket you own. There are also a couple ah-mazing black jackets in the Vault this month. They've been hugely popular with members!

2. A Green and White Holiday Outfit

Green is my usual go-to holiday color. It's natural, it's quieter and it's harder to find pretty greens which means I have something to hunt for all the time! A green and white combo  is also just easy on the eyes, unlike jarring and loud red and white can be.

When I moved this fall, I rediscovered some vintage dresses and skirts that belonged to my mother, like this green satin embroidered ensemble. It is entirely handmade by her seamstress from back in the day, and I can barely fit into it. But I wanted you to see how pretty and soft a white and green combination can be during the holidays.

I usually poo-poo shrugs. That's because they hit you at the typically one of the widest parts of your body, the rib cage, and create weird proportions. But if it is truly a bolero like this one, and being worn like a bolero is meant to be worn, meaning it is of a fine fabric (not acrylic or shaggy wool) and worn over a fine coordinating piece, then it will look right. If you're wearing a shrug in any other way, it is not a bolero and it is not right. By the way, there is about the prettiest green blazer (sounds crazy, but trust me) in the December Style Vault. It will flatter any skin tone. And it's not expensive!

3. A Vintage Velvet Holiday Outfit

This vintage velvet dress came to me from my very stylish friend Angie. I about fell on the floor when she offered it to me. It is that really good, old, thick velvet. And those sleeves! I have a couple velvet pieces in the December Style Vault, including a navy velvet blazer that you won't believe the price. And a pretty green one, too.

I also love the heavy satin belt. This dress is entirely handmade as well, and it feels so good on. It's a soft celadon green, so it quietly approaches a holiday green theme, again without screaming at you. One of the reasons I love all things velvet.

Here's an upclose of those sleeves. My jewelry is also pretty soft and quiet. Simple crystal stones and not a lot of color here, either.

Wherever you are going and whatever you are wearing as you cruise the holiday circuit, remember, these are just clothes. Use them to feel pretty, so you can forget about yourself and move on to focusing on others, doting on and loving everyone else who needs to feel pretty, too.
