What To Pack For A Winter Getaway To The Beach

Tina, here.

Calgon, take me away. Yeah, that's not happening for me anytime soon. But I keep hearing that certain lucky people do tend to plan getaway trips this time of year to the tropics to escape the doldrums of winter. Which presents a travel and packing problem. It takes snow boots and a down coat to get from Point A to Point B, but once arrived, you're feeling weird in your snowsuit because everyone around you is wearing sundresses and sandals.

So, here is what to pack for a winter getaway to the beach.

Keep in mind that the rule of thumb for resort dressing is that you dress according to the locale, not the season. So even if it's winter here, it's always summer in resorts. Dress accordingly.

Layers are the key. When you leave your home in the arctic, you'll need layers you can easily shed once you touchdown in warmer climes.

Start with a t-shirt. Then add a sweater. Then a jacket. If you can in any way avoid a heavy winter coat, do. I stuffed a warm pashmina inside my carry-on for another layer.

Start out with boots and socks, too.

Pack some sandals and a lightweight scarf in your carry-on, as well, for an easy wardrobe change once arrived at your destination's airport.

Imagine I am now landed in the Maldives and feeling un-chic in boots and my sweater. No problem. Shed the sweater and boots and exchange for the sandals and scarf stowed in my carry-on.

Throw off your jacket, too and sling it over an arm en route to the hotel. Everything else fits right back into my carry-on until I'll need it for the trip home.

These white jeans will be in the rotation all week, too, so pack a stain stick.

You won't be seeing these guys all week, so keep them stowed til your flight home, when you'll wear them again.

That white t-shirt you wore on the plane will be a great daytime top for your cute skirts and shorts you pack.

Pick one accent color to make your wardrobe of mostly neutrals pop. This is how you keep from overpacking - stick to a neutral palette with one or two pops of color.

I'll always throw in something black for a trip. It's an easy way to dress up on short notice.

You know what I'm about to say, surely, if you've read my packing lists before. Wear the same jewelry the whole trip so you don't have to worry about keeping up with it or locking it up or losing it. When you're wearing mostly neutrals, you can make your accessories pop.

Always pack 2-3 times more tops than bottoms. That's a good general rule of thumb for your overall wardrobe, too.

I usually take one packable dress. Better to be overdressed than underdressed, always. Notice, I'm wearing the same sandals. Shoes take up the most room in your suitcase, so if you can stick to 2-3 pairs, you'll be so glad you did. Plus, you'll have room to bring something home!

Guess what? Your cover-up doesn't have to perfectly match your swimsuits. And guess what again? The one-piece is making a comeback...more on that later this spring.
