What To Wear To A Holiday Office Party

Tina, here.

Holiday office parties are here again. The rule of thumb, ladies, is to always dress to respect, and less to impress. I am a firm believer in no cleavage, no short skirts, and no hooker heels for any office event. So, here are my suggestions on what to wear to a holiday office party and still look fun and festive.

What To Wear To A Holiday Office Party

1. For a casual holiday office party, a fun holiday sweater is fine as long as it is not crude or "ugly."

It's cheeky. It's fun. And it's not a rude message. And, it's my initials. So basically I have to wear this sweater everywhere this season. Never overspend on holiday sweaters. It should be obvious why.

You can always go a little overboard on jewelry during the holidays. But make one thing the statement (or at most 2), either the earrings and the necklace, or the earrings and the cuff, just not all 3. My sweater, btw, is vintage Kate Spade that I bought on consignment. If you want one, too, searching eBay would be my suggestion. But I do have some super holiday sweaters (not ugly) inside the December Vault, and I just added more to the December Style Notes.

2. For a more serious holiday office party, your best work dress or suit is in order, and just add sparkly jewelry.

Oh that trusty LBD. It goes everywhere! Even to a holiday party. Now you know never to put a red jacket with your black dress, right? Please tell me you knew that. Green, yes, but never red. It's too loud and aggressive and just not attractive. But winter white jackets? They're my favorite.  You saw this one last week on the blog and here it is again. It's so useful. I found the BEST one that I put in the December Style Vault.

Some parties you'll be going to straight from work. No problem. Wear sensible earrings, like pearls, during the day, and add the sparkly party stuff later. It will all be in your clutch, which was inside your large bag all day.

I'm letting everyone know that yes I am in the spirit. I'm wearing green, after all! You can get yourself one of these pretty cuffs at The Blowout Co.

Don't have any holiday shoes? That feel special? It's ok. Wear your black patent heels.

3. The ubiquitous velvet blazer always works for holiday parties. But get it right.

Take that LBD and bump it up with velvet if you don't have fancy jewelry. Men everywhere pull theirs out during the holidays, and you can keep up , too, with the right one.

Make sure yours fits well under the arms and in the shoulders, and doesn't have a wide lapel. And if the velvet is older and not great quality, it will start to wear away like the velveteen rabbit. Not good. You can find 2 pretty, feminine velvet blazers inside the December Style Vault (one is the most magical shade of evergreen). Mine here is ancient Ralph Lauren, in a deep mink brown.

Oooooh fancy shoes! When else are you going to wear them if not during the holidays? But for an office party, make sure the rest of your outfit is not over-the-top if your shoes are. Keep it tasteful, dolls. And yes, you can wear open-toe and peep-toe in December. As I always say, if you're not walking through snow or rain to get there, you can wear them. Shop the prettiest fancy heels and flats in the December Vault.
