Fall Rain Boots That Look Good

Tina, here.

I first discovered real rain boots when I lived in London. There were plenty of European and classic English rain boots to be seen on a daily basis. Rain boots are a way of life for those in the city, and more regularly, those embracing an active country lifestyle. A site you rarely see in England or on the continent is grown women wearing silly rain boots. On the contrary, these lasses take their Wellies and rain gear quite seriously, just like they do their afternoon tea. Little chaps can have silly rain boots. Adults mayn't. Americans have more fun with rain boots. A lot of us own Hunter boots, including moi. So let's see how to wear them like an adult, shall we?

The October Style Vault has been updated with links to more fab finds, including my favorite rain boots you’ll see in this blog! If you’re a member, look for the notes below and start shopping. If you’re not a member, you can join here and get inside the Vault today!

How To Make Fall Rain Boots Look Good

1. Rain boots are bulky, usually dirty and often ugly. Keep them in their place and don't try to put lipstick on a pig.

Raincoat, rain hat and boots. With velvet cord ankle pants. No dresses with your rain boots, please. Unless it's Steeplechase or the Derby or some such athletic event taking place in a muddy, wet field. Shop these Hunter boots here. October Style Vault update: shop one similar to my raincoat and hat inside the updated Style Vault, Style Notes. Curvy options added!

Look for a rain boot with an adjustable shaft so you can tighten around your calves. Since most are rubber, it's not unusual to find this option.

2. But don't dress like the chimney sweeper, either.

Rain Boots For Adults

You can still wear nice clothes under your rain boots. Because the boots get dirty, not your pants. Which is the whole point.

As with your regular fashionable tall boots, if you're tucking skinny pants inside, make sure they are skinny pants and not bootcut or straight that you roll and pin under there. I'm not into knee socks poking out above boots, either. Vault members, shop my white skinny cords inside the October Style Notes, from the blog on cords.

3. Rain boots aren't just for the rain (well-illustrated on this crisp and sunny fall day).

Hunter Boots

I was foraging for truffles in my woods the other day. HA. As if. But seriously, think of your fall rain boots as your casual Saturday boots, if they are comfortable. And that's a big "if." Keep reading.

Hunter Boots

You can see I haven't really worn jeans with my rubber boots, although you most certainly could. I just wanted to show you that they are more versatile when you get ones you actually enjoy wearing. October Style Vault update: shop a quilted field jacket like this one in the October Style Notes.

4. Rain boots are not rubber Uggs, i.e. you may not wear them with yoga pants and leggings (but you don't wear these scourges on the everyday wardrobe, anyway).

Wear some pants with your Hunter bots.

Big Fat No. These are boots. So wear some pants.

I quickly learned in London not all rain boots are created equal. Most look like rubber uggs. Natural rubber construction with a soft jersey lining is standard. But have you ever noticed that's about all the "construction" you get? There's no cushion or arch support or padding for our feet. Well, I did my research and found the holy grail of rain boots. They cost the same as the ones you see everyone in America wearing, but are far superior. They're not British or American either. You wear them and people will think you’re famous. And smart. Style Vault Insiders have been shopping them all month because they were one of my featured must-haves for October. If you'd like to get in and start shopping all my must-haves, you can join the Style Vault, too.
