What To Pack For Spring Break

Tina, here.

My spring break came early this year, so I had to go far to catch the sun. All the way to San Diego.

George's rooftop in La Jolla, CA

Like you, I had many requirements of my wardrobe: there would be hiking, a jaunt thru wine country, some beach time and nice restaurants in the evening. If your spring travel involves more family-fun activities like national parks or Disney, you'll still want to be sure to pay attention to this packing list. Because no khaki shorts or t-shirts are allowed. Mckay cupcakes? (Fun fact: we ate at George's in La Jolla twice because, well, the view. And the food. They took my picture and put it on their website!)

You can probably carry your suitcase on without checking it if you stick to this packing list. That's what I usually do. Which really comes in handy if you get bumped off a flight without your bags. For 24 hours. Like I did. But heading back into San Diego was sufficient consolation.

What To Pack For Spring Break

1. Wear your travel outfit to & fro.

What To Pack For Spring Break

I wear white jeans with a white tee and a colorful jacket, and flats, on the plane. Both ways. With a big scarf or pashmina for extra warmth.

I stuff this pashmina inside my backpack because you never know when you'll be freezing cold.

2. You need twice as many tops as bottoms.

Spring Break Packing

I take 2 two t-shirts, a button down and a pullover sweater. I stick to mainly neutrals, with the exception of a floral button down for variety.

I take one jacket, and made sure I can wear it with everything I pack.

3. Pack a second pair of lightweight pants (or bermuda shorts) for daytime touring.

Army green pants / chinos are huge this spring. And they're not jeans. And they're fun. And they're basically a neutral. Style Vault members, there are 2 styles in the March Vault since they've been so popular.

See why I like white jeans so much? They go with everything, and no one else will be wearing them. If they are, ask them if they read this post ;) Style Vault members, shop my fave pair of white girlfriend jeans in the March issue. They are the new shape - not too skinny, not too loose.

4. Wear your going-out top or sweater with your white jeans for evening.

You can really wear any of your tops with the white jeans, and look pretty put-together.

Ok, ok, I get it, you need more options. Toss in another skirt you can wear with flats in the day or with your wedges at night.

You'll be glad to have supportive flats or sandals. Tennies are ok if they are cute and not old and dirty lake shoes.

I know you can't believe I chose a white skirt, but if you have a stain stick you're fine. Do not fear the white outfit!

5. Use restraint when it comes to accessories.

One of the easiest ways to keep your packing light is to wear the same jewelry on the plane you will wear the entire trip.

Shoes weigh the most and take up the most amount of space in your bag. I try to stick to 3 pairs, and one of them I'm wearing on the plane. A walking shoe, a supportive flat and a going-out heel or wedge.
