3 Simple Steps to Transition Summer Clothes to Fall

Can you believe it? It's time to start thinking about transitioning your summer clothes into fall. Which is always a bit tricky because it's still so hot for many of us! But it just feels weird to wear your red, white and blue to a football game. In August. But it's way too hot to pull out the cords and sweaters.

So here's a little guide on how to transition your summer clothes into early fall by making just a few adjustments.

1. Start to reintroduce a little animal print.

I bought this white shirtdress at the end of the season last summer (on sale, duh) and have been wearing it all summer this year. But I'm not done with it. So, I'll just turn it into a fall dress by...

...by swapping out my leather flip flops for my animal print peep toe wedges. Animal print on a lighter background works great as a wardrobe extender for carrying summer pieces into fall.

I also change up my jewelry to pieces that may be a bit heavier than the shell and wood pieces I've been wearing with this dress.

2. Start to wean yourself off summer's hot colors and let softer tones and neutrals carry an outfit.

Here's how you do this: to go with your white jeans, replace your pink t-shirts with black ones. Or your bright yellow, blue or green, and instead wear a tee in a neutral, like tan or grey, with your white jeans.

Black and white is such a great transition color combo for between seasons. I love it in fall as much as I do in spring.

Notice my accessories are in golds and tans, i.e. warmer tones, which brings us to...

3. Keep wearing your summer dresses, but change out your accessories to tone down the summery-ness to a more fall-ish flavor.

See that? One dress works in multiple seasons just by swapping out your accessories. This is why I am such a fan of a wardrobe built on the classics that can easily be updated each season with a few inexpensive accessories.

During the hot summer months, I wear it off the shoulder, but come fall, I'll wear it up on my shoulders for a new look.

Here's another summer dress I can take into early fall by adding a warm rust jacket for those cooler mornings and evenings.

And I'm all-in with my brown suede wedges by this point in the season.
