Five Women, One Black Top: How We Wore It

Tina, here.

We found a top that could quite possibly be the holy grail of tops. It works on everybody. Every Body. And it comes in 3 colors so you can love it three times as much! We reference the black top here, but they are all great! It's referred to as a surplice top, which means it's a wrap style (this one is a faux wrap so there's no tying or actual wrapping on your part) and you can adjust the waist line and the bust line so it works on the short-waisted, the long-waisted and everyone in between.

Ta da! The Fits Everyone Black Top, and we have even secured a special discount just for Style Vault members (keep reading!). The brand new Lyford black wrap top from J. McLaughlin is a lightweight, stretch microfiber jersey that promises the right amount of drape and a rich matte finish.

You know me, I love the classics. And you know Jessica, she'll have fun with a trend. When you look at all of us, we're tall, petite and every size in between. Some of us (hello Francie) don't even wear black. But she styled it perfectly here. We're even wearing a full-size range from XS to L, and we think this top looks pretty fabulous on each and every one of us.

Modern Classics: Tina Wears the Lyford Black Top

I love dressing up a simple black top for cocktails and dressy events. The beautiful thing about wearing blacks together is that as long as they are different materials, you can mix and match them without looking like you tried to match and failed.

Matte jersey and silk? Well of course they go together! Just add a fun shoe in a pop of color or with sparkle, and, as my grandmother taught me, pile on the pearls and you're good to go to a fancy-shmancy restaurant or cocktail event.

The key to wearing this black top is to, and we're getting graphic here, make sure you create a nice deep v at your neck by pulling down the bottom layer of the wrap under your left chest and the top layer under your right chest. Are you with me, dolls? What we want to avoid is both layers crawling up your chest and choking you. Capiche?

A party shoe is a must-have in your wardrobe at all times. This is not something you want to run out and try to grab before an event. You'll end up overpaying for an uncomfortable shoe, or buying a style on sale that you don't even really love. We're doing an entire series on shopping for shoes this fall, so stay tuned!

I would love to have somewhere to wear this outfit. I think I may just wear it on a random Thursday night to dinner. And if I get stares, I'm fine with everyone thinking I either just left or am about to head to a much more exciting event.

Maxi skirts are still going strong - just make sure yours has some movement and doesn't look like a pair of drapes hanging off your hips. You can shop one similar to mine here in your Style Vault, and be sure to meet me on Thursday for drinks and we'll have a grand time imagining all the things people are whispering about us.

Jewelry is key when taking your everyday clothes (as I consider this top to be - I'll also wear it with jeans this fall) and calling them into duty for a dressy occasion. I tend to choose large costume jewelry like a big cuff, or go really small and sparkly and just pile it all on. Here I went with one big cuff and one long strand of pearls. Nothing too over-the-top, but both worn together make a statement.

With jewelry I'll choose 2 focus areas out of three, either earrings and a necklace, or earrings and cuff, or a necklace and a sparkly cuff (and go away earrings like studs), and so on. But I have no problem going big with shoes. You can shop similar to these, plus both outfits I featured here, in the Style Vault. And don't forget you can also access our exclusive Style Vault discount code on this fab black wrap top in there, too.

But that's just me! You'll love how everyone else styled this black wrap top too. Make sure you get the 15% discount and see Barbara, Jessica, Francie, and Deidre's ideas by being subscribed to our blog!

Here's to good deals and good style.

Best,

Tina
