How To Look Chic In A Summer Rainstorm

Tina, here.

Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day. Or just at night while we're sleeping on a porch with a metal roof. Kthx.

But seriously, what do you wear when it's hot and humid AND raining? (You do keep an umbrella in your car, right?)

No rubber flip flops, ladies! And def no rubber rain boots. Unless you want sweaty, smelly, feet.

So do you put your white jeans away on a rainy day? Don't. That's what everyone else does. And they wear boring dark colors or sad, old clothes they don't mind getting dirty or wet. Do you play in mud puddles? I didn't think so. So you can wear your white jeans (or any of your sunny day clothes) and give everyone else something to smile about.

You run out the door in the morning in your white jeans and didn't realize it was going to downpour that afternoon. Oops.

No problem. Just turn your jeans into high waters! Not really, but do cuff them so when you're running from your car to your meeting or restaurant, you don't get as much splashing on your pants.

You can also roll your jeans - just about twice, and keep it kinda messy. Not all '50's sockhop style.

Your leather bag will not make it in the rain. How about a nylon backpack? I have one I use for travel and in the rain.

Your nylon backpack *must* be stylish or it's a no-go. No junior high backpacks, please. Find my favorite stylish nylon bag/backpack inside the June Style Vault.

Tie a scarf on that bag, doll, Jackie O style. To give it a little stylish and colorful jolt.

Here are a few more outfit ideas for you to have on standby during a summer rainstorm.

I love a navy trench. It's the 4th down on your list, though, behind a great caramel color one, a black one and white one. Never button or zip a trench. Always wrap and then tie a half-bow to the side.

Buy a small, lightweight umbrella and keep it in the backseat of your car. Not in your trunk. I also keep a scarf in my car to wear over my raincoat and even my head if I don't have an umbrella.

A summer hat is another great rainy day problem solver.

I wear my cognac color trench all summer long. It doesn't have a heavy lining, so it works in the heat and humidity. This one is Burberry, but I promise you, mine is not. Mine is in the June Vault, Style Notes. And it's less than $100 - you save $145 on it, making the $7.99 membership fee a mute point, I would say :). Info here.

Here I am demonstrating how to wrap your trench, then tie the sash in a half bow to the side, so you don't have an appendage on your belly. (Yes, Sherlock, my jeans might be slightly ripped, but I had to borrow these from a much more hip person than myself.)

Ta-da. It's raining and I'm wearing white jeans, a trench and a straw hat. And feeling very chic about the whole thing. Not a rubber flip flop or hoodie or khakis in sight.

So of course I do all white in the rain, too.

If you can find a white rain jacket, do not be afraid of it! You can wash it. And how nice not to be the hundredth blah person in the crowd on a rainy day. Add a pop with an umbrella in a fun color. Perfect white anorak in June Style Notes for Vault members.

My cute scarf comes in handy with this white-on-white look.

So basically, dolls, what I'm saying is that I want you to wear your normal clothes in the rain, and just add a cute raincoat, cuff your jeans, and carry a scarf and a hat. And keep your umbrella inside your car, not in your trunk. How many of you have made that mistake? :)
