I collect white clothes. BUT I am also going through something lately and craving more color. My once pearly home is now popping with cranberry and forest green. And I see pops in my wardrobe, too. You'll notice this as I bring you Spring posts. But today, I go back to my roots. White on white on white. This palette is warm and cozy in Winter. Winter whites look good on everyone if you choose the right fit and fabric. Most people worry that wearing white adds the lbs. It really doesn't if you follow these guidelines when choosing your whites. And if you have a good stain remover, you can wear winter white with no fear.

I'm wearing the iconic Carolina Herrera white button-down. It is the most gorgeous crisp silk tafetta. Not your everyday white button-down, but if you want the Icon, this is it. (Don't worry - I've provided plenty of other more price-friendly options below!) It's "strong" enough to be worn without a cami, and, untucked, it never loses its shape or finds a crease. It can be worn tucked into a ballgown skirt or worn out over slim cocktail pants. I'd like to think I'd wear it with dark jeans and smart flats for daytime, but since I don't live in Monaco I probably won't. When Ms. Herrera retired I decided it was time to secure one of these from her last collection. I've wanted one for years and years.
Notice the princess seams. That's a detail that makes a white top look slimming rather than enlarging because it creates definition.
You'll also notice the collar stands on its own. Just a slight pop - don't get too crazy and make it stand up straight. When you pop the collar of a white blouse, it frames your face nicely, which is another small yet meaningful detail to keep white clothing from adding lbs. And you'll see I've cuffed the sleeves to show the wrists - that's a must for all tops.
Here are some alternative white blouses, at a more friendly price point. Be sure to wear a vanilla cami underneath, not nude, beige or white. But the color of vanilla ice cream. This is my favorite stretch cami, which is convertible v-neck or scoop neck (they call it "ivory egret").
White pants don't have to scare you. If you want to wear looser-fitting white pants, the key is drape and fluidity. Which is hard to achieve with substandard fabrics. That's not to say manmade materials won't fly. In fact, many manmade fabrics offer a superior drape when cut well. I especially like viscose and triacetate, and believe it or not, polyester has been revolutionized. But don't expect the prices to be low-end even for these once-low brow materials.
Ok so I recognize my palazzo pants are a bit extreme. I've never actually worn them out - but my BFF Deidre has so at least they weren't a total waste.
