How To Wear Turtlenecks Without Looking Like The Michelin Man

Tina, here.

It's so funny how I get a reputation for being for or against something in the sartorial world. Take turtlenecks. I've had people say they think I don't like them. Au contraire. I love them. Turtlenecks frame the face so nicely and give you that chiseled jawline we all want. They can hide a neck recovering from the stripes (i.e. necklines). Turtlenecks can give you something we all want. A loooong, swan neck. But they can also make you look like you have no neck, or make you look quite buxom (especially in cowl necks), or a host of other mean things when worn incorrectly.

Here, my lovelies, is how to wear turtlenecks the correct way and be a swan, not the Michelin Man.

1. Scrunch, don't fold, your turtleneck.

The biggest mistake people make is to fold the turtleneck over, rather than scrunching it. It seems counterintuitive, but the fold creates more volume (width) and also can shorten the neck. The scrunch allows for a bit taller neck. No one wants a short neck.

The folded turtleneck is bulky and wide.

A scrunched turtleneck gives the appearance of a taller neck. Plus, it's just more updated.

Side view of the scrunch. If you can't see the difference, you just have to trust me on this one. Wearing your hair up is a great look too, to really draw attention to that loooong neck.

Major bonus points for a turtleneck with a diagonal pattern like this one - you hear me say this all the time, but anything on your body that cuts at a diagonal is way more flattering, as opposed to horizontal lines that cut you in half. The diagonal pattern of this sweater keeps you from looking too busty, which turtlenecks can tend to do. These diagonally designed sweaters can be so difficult to find. Like water in the desert, really. But not to worry. I found you one, and just added it to the Style Notes in the December Style Vault

2. With all that extra volume around your face, wear a column of color to create one long line.

Turtlenecks are by nature bulky. If you keep the line long and lean by wearing one color, you detract from the bulk.

MAJOR RULE ALERT: no mock turtlenecks. Ever. Ever. Ever. Unless you want a really short, stubby neck. Or cowl necks, unless you let me see it first to sign off on it.

These are ivory jeans. The elusive ivory jean. I love them so. You can, too. I just added a pair to the Style Notes in December's Style Vault.

3. Sleeveless turtlenecks are a great way to get the look without bulking up your frame.

I love sleeveless turtlenecks. And short-sleeve furs. It's like half winter and half spring in the same outfit. I learned this trick in Paris. All the cool women wore short-sleeve furs and turtlenecks. It makes going in and out of over-heated stores much easier and more comfortable.

When it comes to jewelry (earrings and necklaces) and turtlenecks, you are much better served wearing a long necklace that falls below your bust line, and earrings that don't mess with the neck. Wearing your hair up, too, is a chic way to really play up the turtleneck. I've got a fab sleeveless turtleneck in the December Style Vault, just added to the Style Notes. Comes in tons of colors!
