How To Buy Jeans, Skinny or Bootcut

Tina, here.

Have you noticed that it's getting harder to find jeans? I mean, the ones we had our clients buy for years and years are no longer in available in store. I have complained. Natch. But I scoured and came up successful. I found the perfect {white} jeans for every size. Vault insiders know I already found the perfect skinny jeans, available in March's Style Vault. But some people still want a bootcut. Here's how to buy jeans, skinny or bootcut.

White bootcut jeans

Here's what to look for in white jeans: you either want a true skinny or a baby boot, a mini bootcut. With a mid-rise, a good thick denim, and the pockets need to be in the right place in relation to your bum. Check length, too. You want a clean break across the middle of the foot. You can wear flats with bootcuts, if they are a pointy-toe flat.

Everyone is still obsessed with skinny jeans and that's fine. There are some great ones (noted above). I wear skinny jeans. We have women who are considered curvy wear them, and they look great. Even petite women can wear them, with the right shoes. You may have some on right now, and I bet you look very stylish. It's all in the fit. I just know you do not look like this because why would you wear these?

a skinny jeans no-no

Your skinny jeans should not puddle at the ankles. Period. These puddle. These are too long. Plus skinny jeans that aren't right for your particular shape can give you that weeble wobble look, drawing all the attention to your hips, and if that is what you want to camouflage, walk away from the skinny jean. The right skinny jeans are in March's Style Vault. Someone even wrote a review of them on the retailer's website, citing us as the finder of the perfect skinny jeans! Aw thanks!

I wear bootcuts (duh) but not exclusively, and not everyone can or wants to wear bootcuts. But both skinny and bootcut jeans must be worn correctly. It's prejudicial and unfair for the retailers not to make a decent fitting and affordable bootcut jean, especially when they were on the fall and spring runways. But I found them. The perfect baby bootcut jeans, and THEY'RE IN WHITE! Can you stand it? Here's a vast improvement on the last look. This is called a mini or a baby bootcut. Not a flare, not straight. The ever so slightly wider leg opening at the ankles balances the hips and thighs. Which creates an hour glass shape, the desired shape for women.

Here are my thoughts, ok my rules, particularly for white jeans.

No straight jeans, ever. And beware, they can look like skinny jeans on the hanger.

straight jeans, a jeans no-no

These jeans actually are labeled "straight" on the tag, but I would say they are both skinny and straight, meriting a double foul. A straight jean can be fitted through the legs or looser; these are more fitted, pretending to be skinny. But the real problem is that the leg opening at the ankles is the same width as the entire leg of the jean. So you don't get either a trendy skinny jean that narrows to the ankles or a figure-flattering bootcut. Translation: straight jeans are TERRIBLE.

No short, cropped jeans. Ever. These are evil. Aka "the evil capri."

cropped jeans are a jeans no-no

Look how short our model's legs appear in cropped jeans? That's because it looks like her legs go from the waistline to the bottom of the jeans (not all the way to her ankles); and her ankles start where the jeans finish (mid-shin). So her legs look stunted and her ankles look abnormally big. See why I don't care for the evil capri? Don't be lured by the runway shots of the cropped pants and capris this season. They're all still evil.

No baggy white jeans, either. When you buy white jeans, you will be tempted to go up a size. That is fine if they actually fit you better. But keep in mind the lighter the rinse, the more they will stretch. Which means you will have a saggy white bottom by mid-day if you don't buy your white jeans to actually fit you (translation: not roomy). It will be worse with over 3% spandex, and, here's a surprise, it will be even more pronounced if the placement of the back pockets is all wrong. Huh?

Look carefully. The base of the rear pockets has crept down below her bum to the top of her rear thigh. This will make your bum look like it goes from your waist down to your thighs. Not perky. Not good.

No thin white denim. You may think all white denim is thin and see-through and will show all the things you want to hide. Not true. If you get the right white denim, that is. It needs to be substantial enough to camouflage what you're self-conscious about (rippling, panty lines, etc) but not so heavy that you are sweating inside.

No holes or rips or shreds, unless you're in you're 20's. Or super cool and you're able to pull it off cause you have the right hair and shoes and everything else. Like my 40-something friend Jenni.

Remember Deidre? She, too,  can pull off shredded and skinny jeans.

One more tip that will change your life: crease your jeans. People make fun of creased jeans.  You'll create a longer, leaner leg. And have the last laugh.
