Meet Your Spring Uniform: The Denim Skirt

Tina, here.

I was just going through a closet and talking with a client about our shared love for that Fabulous Thing That Is A Denim Skirt. Why are they so underrated? I love mine. All of them. This post is a from a couple springs back, and seems super relevant in light of our convo, so we're re-posting it. Plus, I found some cute denim skirts if you need to update yours!

You know why you can't wear your yoga pants this spring and summer? Because they are yoga pants. Also they're hot. Not as in, Girl, you look hot in those yoga pants. But because you will sweat. Down there. Ew.

You need a denim skirt. Skirts are cool in heat. They are feminine. And a denim skirt is durable (no wrinkling), and you can wear them for days without washing. What, like you don't do that with your jeans? You can go to the baseball park, and then to a fun restaurant and never skip a beat. And a denim skirt is not a pair of gym shorts and a t-shirt. Or a mini skirt. Or a muumuu. All of which I oppose when grown women wear them in public. A denim skirt is your perfect spring and summer uniform. (I know you're wondering what's wrong with muumuus. Not everything. That's for another day, dolls.)

My denim skirt is a closet staple.

Big surprise, I also have a white denim skirt.

You Need A Denim Skirt

A great spring outfit, a denim skirt with a button-down, untucked to make it more casual. Just switch to a t-shirt when it gets warmer.

I will not make you get a white one because it truly may not be practical for you if you are doing summer things outdoors with dirty children having fun. Me, though? I can have one. And probably would under those circumstances anyway. I have a really great stain remover. Here's a great off-white denim skirt, if you want to dip your big toe in first.

Don't be afraid of white clothes. Just break the seal and buy one piece. With our help, anyone, any size can do it. A durable, washable white denim skirt makes a great gateway to white clothes in general.

I also love a business-casual denim pencil skirt. It needs to be a darker rinse to be professional. And no rips or frayed hems.

Couple rules about denim skirts.

  1. Much like your jeans, no bedazzled pockets or weird seams or stitching.
  2. Pencil is your desired shape (on the right), as opposed to a short square (on the left).

3. Don't go any longer than the middle of your knees when wearing a denim skirt. The fabric just gets too bottom-heavy.

Cute if you're cast as an extra in the community production of Oklahoma!, but don't go shopping your closet for your old '70's denim skirt and think you're all that when you wear it. It's time for an update.

Most of you are going to go for a faded wash denim skirt instead of white.

Here's how I like to wear my faded denim skirt. First look is the shorts and t-shirt alternative.

You Need A Denim Skirt

We love skirts all spring and summer. With a t-shirt and espadrilles. You could also wear some Converse or a sandal. This is your summer grocery shopping outfit, or your play in the park outfit. It's the real casual way to wear a denim skirt.

Next look, we're taking it up a notch. With a going-out top.

Remember this top from the Vault?? If you still have it, wear it proudly, knowing you had it before it went mainstream. :) If you're meeting some friends at the movies or want to dress up your denim skirt a bit, throw on a going-out top and add some wedges or fun sandals. And don't forget your small clutch. Leave your carry-on, I mean large handbag, in the car trunk.

And here is my favorite way to wear a denim skirt: "casual Friday" with a button down and heels.

When you're trying on a denim skirt, you want it to be fitted. Not loose. It will stretch and we can't have you in droopy bottoms. Bear in mind, the lighter the rinse, the more the denim will stretch, too. You've been warned.
