The Do's and Don'ts of Wearing Denim

Tina, here.

Are you guilty of double-denim-ing?

The Do's and Don'ts of Wearing Denim

You've heard of the Texas Tuxedo, wearing blue jeans and a matching blue denim jacket? Well, this is almost as bad. We'll call it a White Tie Texas Tuxedo. No bueno.

Ahh, much better. There is a way to wear denim on denim, but it's kinda tricky. So the safe bet is to wear different colors of denim on denim, like a faded denim jacket with white jeans.

Two rules for wearing denim on denim.

1. Don't unless you know what you're doing.

2. Go for it as long as the denim washes are different, and then just have fun because, they're just clothes after all.

But what else can you pair with white jeans? Add a linen jacket to your denim mix. Very spring. Very fun mix of textures.

When I'm mixing textures of a strong nature, I like to keep the tones in neutrals so there's more flow to the outfit. If that even makes sense. I mean, don't overthink it. It's like decorating: if you mix textures, keep them in the same color family.

Ok, I actually want to take a poll on this: what do you think about a white denim jacket with dark denim jeans? You can weigh in on our instagram feed here. We'd love to hear what you think!

I swapped out my white denim jacket for a white slub jacket instead. But I'm just sayin', sometimes you have to make do with what you have, and it might be a white denim jacket.

I love navy and white for spring. You can also do navy and ivory if you don't wear white next to your face (some redheads don't). Then add some pops of color with your accessories, like turquoise or orange, or both.

So. Here's the thing. If you're going to attempt denim on denim, they MUST be different washes of denim. There really aren't any exceptions I can think of. Except one old, old Ralph Lauren ad like 20 years ago of a model wearing a dark denim western shirt (that's what began my love affair and serious hunt for western denim shirts) with a slightly lighter pair of jeans, though they were dark rinse. It looked so cool. But in reality, is tough to pull off.

Here, light rinse on top, dark rinse on bottom (good if you are hippy). You can reverse the look and wear and wear a darker denim shirt on top with faded rinse jeans on the bottom (great if you are busty). I love that look too. With cowboy boots especially.

You saw me in this denim shirt last Fourth of July. I've been wearing it again this spring like this, trying to be all cool and Ralph Lauren-y. By the way, my blouse is Polo, and here it is on eBay - you'll have to buy the closest to your size and alter to fit. It says men's, weird. Mine is women's. So these will be humongous, but can be altered.  Vault Insiders, be sure to check April Style Notes for lots more denim on denim outfits!
