My Gannie said to spend your money on 3 things: travel, education and good shoes. I recently came across one of her red Ferragamo shoe boxes and remembered this afresh. No one needs to buy a whole new wardrobe every season. But it's tough to pass over a new season's fresh styles, especially when they are as gorgeous as what I'm seeing for this fall. It's a great season to update your classics, and to have fun with some easy-on-the-wallet trends. So I'm giving you a mixture of the classics worth considering if it's time for an update, and the fun styles to refresh your still-strong classics.

1. Multi-Purpose Tote

A tote will be your kids' toy chest, your waiting room library, your modern day briefcase and your in flight carry-on bag. It will hold your smaller clutch for evenings. Your touch-up makeup. And your water bottle. So it's got to be a good, sturdy piece. And neutral so it goes with every outfit you own (who has time to switch their bag every day?). That's why I've chosen predominantly greys and browns. But I threw in a couple unexpected choices for those of you who don't mind if your handbag / tote clashes with your outfit.

2. Pretty Go-Anywhere Pumps

Is there such a thing as a multi-purpose, go-anywhere pair of shoes? Yes. It's called the black patent pump. If you just can't do patent, there's a suede option, too. The idea is that when you don't have the right pair of shoes to complete an outfit, or you need that comfortable, trusty pair to last all day or night on your feet, you've got to have the pair that goes with a whole lotta looks in your closet. Like pearl or diamond studs in your ears, it's the go-away shoe. The shoe that goes with everything so it won't compete. You can dress up or down black patent, with a cocktail dress or a pair of jeans. See how below. They are year round (yes, really), and you can ground a super-trendy outfit with a classic pair of pumps. I've shown you how to wear these pumps in various types of looks below.

3. Three Season Leather Jacket

A leather jacket is the new cardigan or suit blazer. It's the new cocktail dress topper. It's as good in spring as it is in winter. It just takes knowing how to layer. (Don't worry, I'll be doing a couple posts on how to layer without looking bigger or frumpy.) I chose grey for this fall because the last two falls I've chosen cognac and black. Grey is the next logical choice. Grey is the color that pairs well with every other color under the sun. See some outfits with these jackets below. I did toss in a cognac option if you don't have one yet.

4. Rich Camel Pants

I say rich because the color is complex. Not because it's expensive. Although, camel pants can be costly because they are rare. Since I'm committed primarily to a wardrobe of neutrals with some color popped in for interest, camel is a wonderful alternative to white, black, and grey, and happens to look FABULOUS paired with any of those. note: The J. Crew option below comes in camel, as well as that bright and kind of awful blue;)

5. Three Season Party Dress

Since we don't really dress up anymore, it's important to have a dress already hanging in your closet that can be worn when you need it, and that can be worn in other types of non-dressy situations. I've given you some ideas below of how to pull that off, but the main point is to be prepared and have a dress at the ready. Update now if you haven't in a while. I did toss in a super fancy dress that I happen to love and know would look just grand at your fancy fall or spring soirée, or holiday party. Just add black patent heels!
