How To Style Black Jeans

Tina, here.

Things I was wrong about. Chokers. I never thought anyone but Barbra Streisand or Princess Di could get away with wearing them. OTK Boots. I was convinced the only reason over the knee boots were around for a second season in a row was because retailers overbought the year before, and had stock they needed to get rid of - but here we are 4 years later and they are STILL here. Black jeans. I gave them the side eye for years. They reminded of bad acid rinse jeans that got washed with a black t-shirt. But I now own 3 pairs. The key to a good pair of black jeans? They must be jet black. NO fading. Just the darkest black possible.

I have  three two pairs of black jeans. I just added that 3rd pair to the Goodwill pile because they've been washed too many times and are now faded. It's purely personal preference why I like them so jet black, but I think it's because they look dressier to me and less acid washy.

I also have a pair of coated black jeans. Like leather, but not as stiff. Or leather. The coating has gotten better over the years so it's not as much like wax as it used to be.

So how do I wear black jeans? This is a very important question because black jeans can go south very easily if worn the wrong way (which is also a purely personal opinion). IMHO I think black looks best with neutrals. You will never see me wear black with a primary color like tomato red, kelley green or neon orange. Splitting hairs, I will wear black with the colors of the sunset and nature like blush, olive and teal. Black looks best with these more complex color ways. Or neutrals like white, brown, camel, etc. What about black and blue? I don't like to see black jeans with just any blue. I like navy and black together, but I don't like anything lighter than a dark navy with jet black. Scroll down to shop more outfit ideas.

A column of black with one other neutral, like this Classic Suede Trench Coat (similar), can be so chic. And soooo easy. But it needs to have a little pop. Just a bit of sparkle can lift your look from dull to interesting. Like these Chanel metallic flats. You can also add a belt or a handbag with a pop of color. Or statement earrings.

If you're not a black jeans kind of girl, don't worry about it. I'm showing how to wear white jeans this fall in a bit. Because you don't have to switch from white to black come fall.
