The Bandana Is Back: Classic Ways To Wear Yours

Tina, here.

I was a Brownie. (It's like Little League for Girl Scouts). We wore little brown bandanas around our necks, a la 1970's stewardess style and 1980's Harold's style. The neckerchief, as it is known. But with the return of western glam, the bandana is back. And I am riding this train. It feels like all of Nashville is, too.

Brownie Uniforms and Bandanas

This is what my Brownie uniform looked like in the '70's. Very chic, non?

Here's how to wear bandanas without looking like a Brownie or a street style victim.

These looks work for your silk scarves, too. So if you don't want to go all out Bandana-style, just use these tips for your other scarves.

1. Tie a bandana around your neck in a loose knot, then move it to one side.

I just didn't know if I would wear a bandana, but I have decided it feeds my western glam obsession quite nicely.

You can see how I cocked the knot to the side of my neck for a more casual and unstudied look. More classic, less hipster.

2. Tie your bandana in a knot and tuck in the corners.

This look works when you are wearing a scoop neck tee or sweater. It can bulk up your top half so make sure you get a sleek wrap, and tuck in those ends well so they don't start unraveling.

The idea is to always keep the look as unstudied as you can, while controlling it so the bandana doesn't get all sloppy on you.

3. Rather than tying your bandana in a knot around your neck, just let the ends hang down the front.

You create a long vertical line when you let the ends of your bandana hang down without tying it at your neck.

Wash your bandana to soften it up then train it to lie flat by tugging at it during the day.

How To Wear A Long, Narrow Scarf

We often show our clients how to wear their long, narrow scarves like this: creating that vertical line projects height and slimness.

4. Wear your bandana like a bandit for a day.

Fold your bandana in a triangle and tie the long ends behind your neck so the tip of the triangle is in front. Then slightly cock it to the side.

5. Wrap a bandana around your wrist and layer with beaded or rope bracelets.

K so this takes some guts to pull off, but I promise you people will love it. And if they don't get it, they clearly don't know that bandanas are back!

I had the best time searching for my old bandanas that I've picked up along the years. I always had one for camping and usually would keep one in my car (no idea why).

A smattering of my fave bandanas.
