4 Timeless Beauty Tips for the Fall

Tina, here.

Hi my name is Tina and I'm a drugstore makeup junkie. But I've been clean (mostly) since I turned 40. I've had a few slips here and there, that can be explained by the perfect storm of being caught with cash in hand at the wrong time and place. Grocery store makeup aisles. Target. And the like. True confessions - I love drugstore beauty products that work. You just have to know not all those promises they make are true. Shocking, I know.

Here are my easy and timeless beauty tips for the fall that you can accomplish even if you are a drugstore makeup junkie like me!

Bare-faced, ready for my makeover. No BB cream, no blush, no shadow on my eyes, no liner, no mascara (actually I think we did brush a teeny amount of mascara on for this pic) and nothing on my lips. It's my "naked face project." In fact, all of us over here at Your Style Vault are taking the plunge for you and all week long you'll get to see our naked face "before" picture. We each had a fall makeover and it was so fun!

Just a sneak peek at our before and after group shot. Don't miss on the blog this week Barbara's, Francie's and Jessica's fall makeovers! We're different ages, have different coloring and different levels of tolerance for how long we'll spend on our makeup. Very interesting, actually!

Here's the thing - I barely wear makeup. I never really learned how until my BFF Deidre showed me (watch for her makeup tutorial posting later this week), and now my friend Carmen (at Private Edition in Nashville - who's giving all you lovely Complete Insiders a 20% discount code that applies to everything on their Therapy Systems site!!) is helping me figure out what to buy each season, and she's always teaching me cool little tricks like applying eyeliner to your waterline (keep reading) and how to make your brows look good. I was like brows? I mean, if you're gonna expect me to fill in my brows, then you're definitely gonna expect me to get them waxed and who has time for this? I don't even get regular pedis or facials or anything like that.

These are my summer lip colors. Pink and coral. I get the itching to switch to mauves and bronzes in September, so here we go.

This little fall makeover routine is perfect for me because it's (1) easy and (2) it's a neutral palette that will work with my entire fall wardrobe, and go from day to evening. So I don't have to have 2 sets of makeup. You can find these products at your local beauty store, or you can call Carmen at Private Edition and she'll ship anything to you (615-292-8606). If you feel the prices are a little too steep, I created a separate fall makeover guide with more affordable options, all from Private Edition, by Therapy Systems. Owner of both operations, Linda Roberts has been profiled by the New York Times, and her skincare and makeup have been seen on the pages of almost every major beauty magazine and on countless famous visages. I ran into Linda one day in Nashville, and we were talking about under eye concealers and all the money one can spend on them. She told me after trying all the expensive ones, she uses her own, "Better Than Cover," which is 20% off with the Complete Insider discount code. The great thing about all my picks is that they will work on any skin tone, any age, any time of day. Just my style. Easy peasy with little room for error. The golds and bronzes are so classic, and so on trend for this fall. (As always, this isn't a sponsored post, just products I love and think you will, too!)

First things first. Wearing makeup is like a painting a house: the paint job is only as good as the primer you use. And like cooking: the meal is only as good as the ingredients you use. Same logic here. Your makeup looks only as good as the stuff you put on under it.

1. Foundation.

KLC-2387

Apparently foundation is still a thing. I thought it was called BB cream or something trendy like that. But you know what? I *think* they're the same thing as long as there is treatment in it. Treatment - good word isn't it? Makeup that treats your skin is my ultimate two-for-one purchase.

Deidre is pretty strict on using a brush to apply this. But again, I'm like, that takes soooo much more time, so I skip foundation more often than not. But I do use SPF every day, and reapply throughout the day, because sun damage ages you faster than anything, and skin cancer will kill you. Our fair-skinned beauty Francie shared some of her SPF secrets here if you're looking for a good one.

2. Concealer.

KLC-2388

I'm a big believer in concealer. In fact, I spend a lot of money on this one item. Because if it can cover circles, brighten my eyes, and feed my skin with peptides and hyaluronic acid and some other stuff I can't remember that's like really good for you, then it's worth it to me to fork over some money. The key is of course, the ingredients actually have to get down into your skin to give you any benefit at all. And this one does.

And here's another really great secret - you can use it as your eye base AND instead of eyeshadow on a day you want that dewy, fresh-faces no makeup look. So, basically it's 3-in-1.

3. Eye Primer.

KLC-2406

Really? Do you really need this? We're on step 3 and I still haven't gotten to any pretty colors yet. But yes, this is important. But only if it works. A cheap one may be fun to apply and make you feel like you deserve a gold star for extra credit, but that's wasted money unless it actually works to keep your eyeshadow on.

You know those days you feel like your makeup is just sliding right off your face, even if you're as dry as the desert? You need primer.

4. Color

KLC-2410

Eyes: The day before the makeover I asked Deidre what eye makeup colors I should look at for fall, and she said gold and bronze. And guess what Carmen suggested when I arrived for my makeover?? GOLD AND BRONZE. I have good people around me. #winning Here Carmen used Beyond Gold, sheered out on my lid, and then a bit of Brown Perfection, sheered out corner to crease. Both are by By Terry.

KLC-2440

For liner, Carmen does this really cool thing where she applies it to my waterline. If you wear contacts this won't bother you at all. If you don't, you probably won't want a stick this close to your eyeballs. This is Holy Black eyeliner in my waterline, and Brown Stellar used as a traditional liner would be. Both are by By Terry.

KLC-2402

Cheeks: I don't like too much color anywhere, so this pale blush brings out the pink undertones in my skin. It's Beach Babe by By Terry.

KLC-2467

Lips: We switched up my routine from the pinks and corals I've been wearing all summer to something a bit more spicy and warm. Do you find yourself re-applying your gloss all day? If you don't use a good lipliner, that's why. It's like foundation for the gloss. Carmen taught me awhile back to start with a liner and then use it to fill in your lips, just very lightly. When you add color and gloss on top, it's not budging! We used Laura Mercier Chestnut lipliner and Therapy Systems Serial Dater lipstick, with Therapy Systems Star Gazer gloss on top. I have been devoted to Star Gazer for a few years. It's the *perfect* gloss alone, and on top of every color you own to make your lips look luscious and lock your color in place.
