What To Wear To A Summer Concert

Tina, here.

It's the season of outdoor concerts and summer music festivals. Wardrobe nightmare. Too hot for pants. Tough to wear a dress or skirt when you may be sitting on the ground. You'll be juggling food, drinks, phone and potentially babies or children. And what if it starts raining? Let's address this now so that when the time comes you're armed and ready wth a plan.

Here's what to wear to a summer concert or outdoor music festival.

1. Layers. Like a tank top underneath a summer wrap or light sweater.

When the sun goes down, the temp can change quite a bit and you may find yourself going from hot to cold within an hour or so.

2. A crossbody bag. For hands-free dancing and swinging babies on your hips.

You've seen this bag before. It's my Target fringe crossbody bag I use for all kinds of outings when I don't want to be bothered with carrying a bag (from several seasons ago). Very useful for traveling as well. Here's a similar fringe crossbody bag and here's a more traditional style crossbody bag.You can shop more summer clutches and totes inside our shopping service, the Style Vault.

3. Light-colored clothing + a stain stick. (Vault Insiders, we've extended the 20% off discount til the end of June on our favorite and magical stain remover. Log in and visit the May Vault to access the exclusive code.)

So yes, I chose white jeans. I like them because they are light-reflecting not heat absorbing. If I stain them I am armed with the right products (see above). And they are stretchy (the lighter the denim, the more they stretch), which is great for sitting.

4. Bring a blanket to sit on - this is key.

You won't believe this, or maybe you will if you have an old mexican blanket, but my brother brought mine back from Mexico in the '90's. And I have used it ever since. I typically keep it in the trunk of my car for that spontaneous picnic or outdoor concert. (Don't I wish.) The ones today are thinner and not the same. But I tracked down a great source for real mexican blankets, and Vault Insiders (login here) can shop it in the June Style Vault, Style Notes. So many pretty colors!

5. Flats.

You'll be walking a lot. From the parking area 2 miles away to the venue. Or if just across the parking lot, there will be grass most likely. If none of those apply, wear the flats so you can get up on your feet and dance!

If pants feel too hot, try a skirt or dress, that is a bit longer so you can sit on the ground without worrying about flashing your friends' kids.

I also would wear a white denim skirt if I knew I had seats and wasn't going to be on the ground. Notice, I still would carry a blanket.

My version of a graphic tee. It has steerhorns on it you can't see, but it's a good quality tee with no words on it. And I paired it with what is basically a pencil skirt, so the effect is one of age-appropriateness.

I'm bringing my mexican blanket everywhere I go this summer! Even if I have seats, you never know if you'll wind up joining the villagers down below in the cheap seats, I mean your friends.

On a hot night, the hair is going up to stay a bit cooler (both metaphorically and literally).

Vault Insiders don’t forget to shop the June Style Notes for even more great outfits for outdoor concerts, in addition to all the June must-haves (white jeans, espadrilles, cute tops, darling sandals, flattering swimsuits, …).
