Your Spring Jacket Has Arrived: The Military Jacket

Tina, here.

I'm a coat addict. And jackets, too. You've heard this before. Oh, wait, that was shoes. Well, anyway, I have a lot of coats, jackets and shoes. But who doesn't? Right?? You're too kind to agree.

A total surprise to me, I've been so into this military green color this spring (even last fall, I got some chinos in this color, and they turned out to be one of the all-time most popular ever items featured in the Style Vault, so I added a spring pair in March's Vault. Also just added a new military jacket since the first one sold out! More info here). It's just not like me to like anything with the word military in front of it unless you're packing heat and defending our freedom. But I guess I'm evolving. Or realized I wanted a new jacket. So I've been wearing this military jacket this spring with everything, and I wanted to show you how you can wear one, too, if you've never considered one.

I'm not one for the boho-way to wear a military jacket, so looks featured here will have that classic-with-a-twist feel. And what about all those pockets? That I usually preach against? They belong on a miltary-style jacket, camp shirts and the like, and these are buttoned down, so they're not flapping in the wind, or out of order like they are on a loose, silk blouse that makes you look like you have flabby boobs.

How To Wear A Military Jacket

You can shop similar looks from today’s post inside the Style Vault, We deliver great recommendations for a fabulous wardrobe all found in one, easy-to-shop place.

1. As a blazer-replacement, to the office on a casual day

Suits are just hardly worn anymore. But don't throw them out, take your black skirt and pair it with a cool jacket, like a military jacket.

If you're headed to a meeting and need to feel pulled together, you can still achieve a professional look by making sure your jackets fit right and aren't too billowy. If you've got a drawstring or a way to nip it in at the waist, do! It helps, too, if all the pockets are buttoned down, to keep the volume in check.

2. With denim, for a typical day running around

The military jacket is a close cousin to the field jacket, which makes regular appearances at country houses across the land. Or in carpool lines when it's still a little too cool to wear your shorts and tees.

What about length? Where does the jacket need to hit when you're wearing a dress or skirt? It's best if it hits right around your waistline, or just below, around your hips. Much longer and you'll look like you're wearing 2 sets of drapes. In this case, my military jacket felt a bit long, but it works because I belted the dress, to define shape underneath all that fabric. And since the dress is on the shorter side, it's kind of a yin-yang look as opposed to 1 long piece on top of another. Capiche?

3. With heels, for a casual night out

People don't dress up that much anymore. I met friends for drinks last week, and I loved it that we all kind of dressed up for one another. It was so fun! But, most nights, you're probably just glad to make it out of the house without taking a kid to the ER. Pop on a cool jacket and boom you're date-night ready.

You can wear a military-style jacket with either bootcut or skinny jeans. That's the beauty of it, it just kinda goes with everything.
