Tina's Guide to Fall Hats and Gloves

We're addicted to accessories. Changing up your accessories can instantly take an outfit from summer to fall, and even around the holiday circuit if done well. Tina is always teaching us to buy wardrobe staples we can dress up or down, and wear in multiple seasons, driving that cost per wear down. Inexpensive accessories keep your look fresh and interesting each season. We're showing how to wear hats and gloves for the new season. And Tina has made a fun little video on how to wear hats for your face shape.

I'm one of those people that loves loves loves hats, but it takes a good amount of courage for me to wear them. Some days I can pull it off, and some days I just don't have it in me. But I have been relying on them more and more as I've been stretching out the days between washing my hair. Sunglasses and hats are just brilliant accessories for hiding a multitude of things.

So hats. What's in and what's out for fall and winter? I can tell you I believe floppy hats are out, and western glam style hats are in. Hats are one of my Must-Haves for the month. (I've been adding new items for Insiders to shop throughout the month, so you might want to check out the collection if you haven't in a couple weeks!)

Out.

In. A western style hat has more of a pitched front brim.

I started seeing leather opera-length gloves (or practically opera length) a few years ago, and I loved the concept. This of course was well-timed for shorter sleeved coats and jackets also making an appearance. So naturally I stocked up and now have brown leather, black leather and even grey suede opera gloves.

My friend Beth at Nashville's Gus Mayer suggested we take some leftover mink from a vintage coat she altered for me and cuff my gloves with it. I mean, I love it!

What a great way to repurpose an old fur coat you inherited but never wear! Think about making pillows, throws, and wraps as well!

You know what perhaps is the easiest hat for anyone to wear? A modified cowboy hat.

Almost any face shape can handle the medium-tall, center dent crown and medium-wide brim.

When it comes to what hat to wear for your face shape, the 2 things to consider are the crown and the brim. For instance, you can pull off a wider brim the taller you are, and you need a more angular crown and brim the rounder your face. Complete Insiders, I've walked you through all the major points to keep in mind in the video we put together for you on how to wear hats. I've been obsessing over bolero hats ever since I've had a fascination with the Spanish conquistador style, and they are just now making their way into fashion. So I have 2, natch. One from last summer, and my new winter version.

klc-9991

Boleros have a flat crown, much like boater hats, which I have a vintage collection of, but they look a little silly on me I'm not gonna lie. A bolero is more forgiving because the brim is a smidge wider and the crown a tad taller.

If a brim is too wide for your frame, especially if it's floppy (which are out, you're welcome) your hat will arrive before you.

klc-9949__1_My collection of hats and gloves you'll be seeing me in this winter. There's a pair of gloves for every purpose. Let's discuss.

So the elbow gloves are great for all those shorter sleeve coats and jackets. Cognac leather gloves are the only color you need for your casual jackets, IMHO. Why? Because they are not black or brown, and cognac leather goes with every color jacket or coat you may have, except maybe red, in which case brown leather is a better choice than black.

My sister and I both have these fingerless gloves. I'm not exactly sure why because if my fingers are cold it doesn't matter if the rest of me is warm and cozy. But the idea seemed good at the time. Now we've got touchscreen gloves.

klc-0002

One of those things I wish I had thought of, like sticky notes. You need some touchscreen gloves if you have a touchscreen phone. You have a touchscreen phone, so yeah, you need these. You can shop the prettiest ones I've found (much prettier than mine ha) in the November Must-Haves shoppable collection, and all my fave hats for the season. (Both regular Vault members and Complete Insiders have access.)

K so let's make a pact to wear hats. And if you do already without being self-conscious, we look up to you. But we're throwing caution to the wind and we're gonna just do it. Don't leave me hanging out there alone, ladies! We can do it!

Thanks for reading and all the best,

Tina
