What's In and What's Out: Fall 2017

Tina, here.

Don't you love reading these kinds of posts, what's in and what's out? I do. But I don't like writing them because I'm sure to offend someone. With that in mind, proceed with caution, knowing that you may disagree with me and that is SO GOOD! It's what keeps the world interesting, and revolving. And colorful. So here we go...

What's In and What's Out for 2017

I have this weird spiritual gift for trendspotting. I see trends. I say weird because I am not one you would ever describe as trendy. As we know, I have a penchant for dressing like an old lady (and I'll repeat it again, there actually are no old ladies, just women who know more than we do). But I foresee trends. I'm not going to bore you with proof but just ask Deidre - she'll tell you it's my gift. I'm forever texting her out of the blue to call it, "stag horns will be big next year" (they were) or "velvet is gonna be huge next year" (it was) or, "fringe is gonna be in next year" (it was)  and "chokers are going to be everywhere in about a year" (and they were). The list goes on. What am I seeing for this Fall and forward? Well, cabin fever, antlers, boho and hipster trends are all giving way to the softer, more refined side of fashion and good taste. Think  Pink. Think "Lady" (suits with grown-up lace and embroidery, top-handled lady bags, belted coats). Tulle. Netting. Think Lady Diana. Maybe because it's the 20th anniversary of her death. On the home front? Palm Beach-inspired bamboo. Wallpaper. Needlepoint. Flocked Christmas trees. Silver.

What you need to know is what to get rid of in your closet. Remove these trends if you haven't already. (This list is not to be confused with the pieces you need to get rid of because they are and never were supposed to be in your closet, like evil capris, Danskos - unless you're a nurse, crew neck t-shirts, man khakis, etc).

What's Out For Fall/Winter 2017 - 2018

1. As much as it pains me to say this, all those great steerhorn t-shirts are passé.

I will never give up my love of western glam, but these kind of t-shirts are just too literal for that look.

2. Chokers. Overdone. This is why I never recommend that you spend any serious money on a trend, because they always have a short shelf life. And when we did feature a post on them, we offered an exclusive discount to you. Welc. :)

This is not a choker. Chokers are not to be confused with lariats, like the one I'm wearing above, which have more staying power because they are a bit more traditional.

Here are some gorgeous lariats that you will wear for years:

3. Off-the-Shoulder tops,  for now. Don't worry. These are forever pieces; it's just that we've all been wearing them all summer long, and yes, they can be worn in winter, but why don't we give them a rest for the winter. Now, as for cold shoulder sweaters, that's a whole 'nother thing, and you can wear those with fervor.

While I loooove my off-the-shoulder top and will wear it again next summer, I'm switching it up for fall and winter to a cold-shoulder sweater you'll see in an upcoming blog post. (Not that you would wear this ultra-summery top in winter, but I'm just using the illustration to make the point.)

Here are some beautiful cold-shoulder sweaters:

What's In For Fall 2017

1. High Neck Blouses.

With a high neck blouse, you want to make sure you're not too covered up, so something sheer (with a cami underneath!) and a skirt is a good option.

Here are some pretty ones for fall.*

* style tip: don't wear a necklace with a high neck blouse; choose a statement earring instead, and wear your hair up if you can!

2. Fair Isle Knits.

I do have plenty of fair isle knits I've been saving for years - so you'll see me wearing them this fall again! But in new ways, mind you. When something comes back around, it's always just slightly different.

3. A Suit (I know, right! To all our clients, aren't you glad we had you keep at least one good suit so we could break it up? Now you can wear it together again!)

Ok so I still think this a bit boring and too office-y. I'll be showing you how to wear suits in the new cool way this fall!

Here are some suits I've seen that I am loving so far:

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more fall fashion coming your way!

Best,

Tina
